MAHAGANPATI

'The Most Powerful Form. Worshipped by Lord Shiva.'

The Battle of Tripurasura

Invoked by
Lord Shiva

This is considered the most powerful representation of Ganesha. Legend says the demon Tripurasura had conquered all three worlds. Lord Shiva fought him but could not win. Narada Muni reminded Shiva that he had forgotten to invoke Ganesha before the battle. Shiva then recited the Shadaakshar Mantra here. Ganesha appeared as Mahaganpati, guided Shiva's arrow, and Tripurasura was slain.

Architecture

'The Hidden Deity.'

The temple is constructed so that the sun's rays fall directly on the idol (Dakshinayan). Interestingly, the idol usually worshipped is not the original one. The original idol, called Mahotkat, has 10 trunks and 20 hands and is kept hidden in the basement to protect it from invaders.
